Abstract
This 2021 study by Miranda-Fuentes et al. investigated how different resistance training protocols impact muscle oxygenation. Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS), the researchers found that while short-duration strength exercise does not significantly change overall oxygen saturation (SmO2), it significantly increases local hemoglobin concentration (Hgb), indicating a robust hemodynamic compensation.
The muscle's oxygen balance remains relatively stable during brief, high-intensity efforts because of a rapid increase in blood delivery to the working tissue. This research clarifies how the body manages metabolic supply and demand during standard gym-based strength protocols.
