This 2024 study explores how limb dominance and testing modes (isokinetic vs. isotonic) affect muscle activity and performance during Sit-to-Stand-to-Sit tests in sedentary individuals. Using surface electromyography, the researchers found that non-dominant legs often show higher muscle activity to compensate for reduced stability, and that the chosen testing mode significantly alters the biomechanical profile of the task.
Clinicians should account for both limb dominance and the specific testing modality when assessing functional movement. The research highlights phase-specific differences where isokinetic mode favors 'sitting' performance while isotonic mode favors 'standing' performance.
