Abstract
This 2023 study by Guede-Rojas et al., published in the Games for Health Journal, evaluated whether adding exergames to standard physical therapy provides superior benefits for older adults. Testing 50 independent older adults over 8 weeks, the study found that adding 30 minutes of exergames to conventional therapy significantly improved upper limb strength and flexibility more than therapy alone.
The combined 'Exergame + Therapy' approach specifically enhanced upper limb strength (arm curl test) and overall functional performance. This provides strong evidence that incorporating interactive technology into geriatric care can lead to more balanced functional fitness gains.
