Abstract
The study by Jerez-Mayorga et al. (2019) compared isometric hip strength and the Muscle Quality Index (MQI) between older adults with hip osteoarthritis (OA) and healthy controls. Subjects with hip OA showed significantly lower strength across all movement planes and significantly slower functional performance in sit-to-stand tests.
Hip OA is associated with a severe decline in functional capacity. The research highlights that the MQI is a valuable clinical tool that relates closely to muscle power and mobility, providing a simple way to track the progression of the condition and rehab success.
