Analysis of grip specificity on force production in grapplers and its effect on bilateral deficit grip specificity and bilateral deficit in force production among grapplers

Abstract

This 2023 study by Escobar-Molina et al., published in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living, investigated how different grip types (standard vs. combat-specific) affect maximal force and the 'bilateral deficit' in 73 subjects (including 42 grapplers). Results showed that grapplers produce significantly higher force with a standard grip than with a sport-specific (Judogi) grip, though grapplers still outperformed non-grapplers in both types.

Training should account for the 'strength gap' when transitioning from general gym work to the mat. While grapplers are stronger than the general population, the sport-specific 'Gi grip' is mechanically less efficient for force production than a standard handle, emphasizing the need for specific grip training.
