Effect of muscle strength at different intensities on resting energy expenditure:

Abstract

This 2017 study by Barboza-González et al. investigated how different intensities of resistance training affect resting energy expenditure (REE). Results showed that while both low (40% RM) and high (80% RM) intensity lifting increase metabolism immediately, only high-intensity lifting keeps REE elevated 24 hours later.

To maximize the long-term metabolic 'afterburn' of a workout, high-intensity strength training is required. This research provides clear evidence that lifting heavy is superior for maintaining an elevated resting metabolic rate during recovery.
