Effects of post-tetanic potentiation induced by whole body electrostimulation and post-activation potentiation on maximum isometric strength:

Abstract

The study by Dote-Montero et al. (2021) investigated whether whole-body electrostimulation (WB-EMS) could enhance maximum strength through post-tetanic potentiation (PTP), either alone or combined with traditional post-activation potentiation (PAP). The study found that neither WB-EMS nor voluntary isometric contractions significantly increased maximum isometric strength compared to a control condition, concluding that these specific protocols are not effective for acute strength boosts in trained males.

This research clarifies the limitations of acute potentiation strategies using electrostimulation. The study concludes that clinicians should not rely on WB-EMS for immediate gains in maximum isometric strength, as results across all time points (1–10 minutes) showed no significant improvement over control.
