Influence of trunk rotator strength on rotational medicine ball throwing performance

Abstract

This 2023 study by Rodríguez-Perea et al. investigated the relationship between trunk rotator strength and rotational medicine ball throwing (RMBT) performance. Using a functional electromechanical dynamometer (FEMD) to assess core strength, the study found a strong correlation (r = 0.68–0.79) between trunk rotation strength and throwing velocity and distance. The findings highlight the critical role of core rotational power in explosive athletic performance.

Training the trunk rotators is highly effective for improving rotational power, which is critical for many explosive sports. The study utilized FEMD to precisely measure strength during horizontal and low cable woodchop movements, providing clear evidence for the link between core stability and throwing capacity.
