Abstract
This 2023 study by Aguilar-Sánchez et al. investigated the relationship between specific strength, measured using a Functional Electromechanical Dynamometer (FEMD), and throwing velocity in elite handball players. Results showed significant positive correlations between peak throwing velocity and isometric strength in both upper-body (unilateral pullover) and lower-body (step forward) tests, highlighting that sport-specific functional patterns are better indicators of performance than non-specific measures.
Coaches should prioritize training exercises and assessment tools that closely replicate the mechanical demands of the game. Traditional strength testing often lacks the 'functional' component of a handball throw, which involves a complex kinetic chain that FEMD can effectively monitor.
